This video is very clever..He used the fact that the collision detection and response in Braid used corner-rounded rectangles and circles...VERY CLEVER!
I want to know what Jon has to say about that? Was that intentional(He solved some puzzles without even using time..just some jumping tricks)?

In other news, Clément Gallet has finally finished his tool-assisted speedrun of Braid. If you liked Braid, and you want to see it torn apart, exploited, and beaten into a bloody pulp, check it out:

Some fun features:

That is very exciting to hear. I love shorter games without filler. The thought of a 20-40 hour game I can sink my mind into is great.
You have talked a lot about how the island will be dense, but my only concern is about the tedium of walking from location to location. Is there multiple speeds of movement? If the island is dense I can't imagine it would be too time consuming to walk from one puzzle section to another on the other side of the island. I am speaking specifically about a point in the game where I as a player know what i need to do and I have to walk from one location to another accomplishing those goals I already know if I have figured out the puzzle and the only time consuming aspect would be the distance between them. Perhaps it is impossible to figure out these puzzles in that way? I never felt that way in Braid. One of the most painful experiences in puzzles games is knowing what to do and having to slowly go to a location. I want to spend my time working on the puzzles or actually observing the environment in a meaningful way.

Depends how good you are at puzzles and understanding the games logic. If you are here I assume you have most likely played Braid. Were you satisfied with that experience? From the looks of it, this game will give you something new, does it really matter if that is 5 hours or 15?

I've just been through this horror myself, ending up with the same approach. I wish I'd found this blog post earlier.

I had one further problem, which was that I want to be able to use pen input as well as mouse and touch. Pen events come through to WM_MOUSEMOVE etc marked with MOUSEEVENTF_FROMTOUCH, *but* they don't get a WM_TOUCH event. You have to separate "from touch" events into "from pen" and "from finger", and process pen events like a mouse. Touches from a finger have bit 0x80 set in GetMessageExtraInfo, pen messages haven't. The lower 7 bits are the touch device id. The 0x82 you found from experimenting is presumably 0x80 plus a device id, and may not work on all machines.

It was only by working this out through trial and error that I had enough information to find this MSDN article confirming it: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms703320%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

I think they look great. Autumn leaves, spiral staircase and "Indie Game: The Movie" designs are the best.

It might be tough to do, but I thought you might be able to do a figure/ground design like the "Star Trek: Into Darkness" poster where if you squint your eyes you can see the Star Trek logo.

Something that would reward careful observation. Just like the game.

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

The first 2 Luis 04 and Luis 10 look more professional to me, are the most vibrant of color while also being subdued. I love how the lettering blends in with Luis 10. I like the staircase but there's something about the how the stairs are lined up with the edge that's bugging me out like some of it is slightly cut off. Maybe a slightly higher shot would be perfect. I also love posters with no lettering at all (the last one) but something about it isn't cinematic enough, like better framing might make a huge difference, or maybe it's because it seems like a very straight on angle but the screen isn't centered. Well, I know these aren't what you were going with anyway, but this is definitely cool! Thanks for sharing! Awesome work as always!

Ah! Really nice to see such a warm feedback from the community.
When I proposed the minimalism one I didn't think it would be that well received.

Very pretty! My favorite is the second one down; I really like how the title is incorporated into the environment. The lines of the steps also remind me of the line puzzles, which seems very appropriate for this game.

How would these be used? I mean, I assume you won't be putting up posters in Gamestop (maybe I'm wrong?). If you're just selling them, I might be interested. I'll have to play the game first, though! Can't wait guys, I hope we'll hear a release date soon.

I love the 3rd one (Luis_02) Why don't you get David Hellman to draw one just like in Braid?
These are all very cool and somehow Sci-fi looking or Inception like movie posters.
I wondered which one you guys ended up pick (I'm glad you didn't show the best one)

Will it be more concrete (A panel or maze in game puzzle) or be more abstract (Like Braid's
Sand castle poster)

bty I don't even know what Luis_02 is it just looks awesome, I'm guessing is a ceiling/roof or wall...

There seems to be an strong and aware emphasis on trying very hard to be iconic. To have places that when you see them, scream "The Witness." Being iconic and recognizable is good but what if you put a spoiler, secret or Easter egg in plain sight that none understands until after beating the game. That would be an interesting poster.

I like how the last one contains a beautiful, sunny part of the island as well as a hint to the game's main mechanic. You could try overlaying it with the text of Luis 3. (Or text as clouds? Or text as flowers?)

Also, I'm requesting that last one in a high resolution! :3

The second from the bottom is highly evocative of the Indie Game: The Movie poster (perhaps a callback of sorts?) due to the color scheme and font, but to be honest it doesn't feel like the font goes too well with the other ones, in my opinion of course! The third one works actually, and the one with the text spread out on the ground is neat but think it would be better with the font you used to write "The Witness" at the end of the February trailer. But regardless, nice work.

The second from the bottom one is the clear winner for me. Keeps it simple, and has that air of mystery about it that the game seems to exude. That puzzle design is very recognisable for me as 'The Witness'. Plus, as beautiful as the in-game graphics are, I've never really like it when essentially screenshots are used as promotional material, with rare exceptions. Plus it has that affect of people who know the game 'get it' and makes them feel exclusive and part of a 'club' as it were; people who don't understand the reference I think will have their curiosity piqued enough that they might give it a Googling.

The fourth one, I'm really not a fan of.

The fifth one is neat! Great use of colours.

The sixth one reminds me very much of the Indie Game: The Movie cover/poster.

The final one is BEAUTIFUL, and I'm glad it doesn't have 'The Witness' written on it. The little screen feels a tad misplaced, but it would make a perfect wall hanging.

Really cool work Shannon. It's very interesting to see the work you've done on those pesky trees. I was curious, do you use any sort of color gradient in your leaf texture to help with the shading?

Also, how do you model those really cut surfaces on the rocks and other geometry. I've messed around with creating simple shapes like that, but they really rely on keeping the shapes planar, and as I edit the model and add detail I tend to really jack up the faces and then triangulation appears and then... poof it's crap. I've considered trying to carve a rock with a boolean block, or using slice plane and capping over and over, but those processes sound very tedious.

Can it be done by writing an alternative class which doesn't have a c'tor or would that simply push the problem along? Here's how it might work:

While I like the article I kinda agree with IKnowImOffensive, not in that the code is some how bad (it works, although it's not the most straight forward), but I do think it's much cleaner and safer to use RAII from a maintainability perspective that what's described here.

(On reflection however, IKnowImOffensive's exception-safety argument may not hold much water however since, if the PS4 compiler is anything like the PS3 one, exceptions wouldn't really be supported very well (& typically haven't been in console game dev for a very long time), if at all, and thus are likely not something game developers can hope to rely on in production code. So considerations towards this requirement are kinda moot.)

You could still pass your custom d'tor code (if required) as a lambda into the RAII object constructor, effectively again leveraging the benefits of C++11 but also make your code far simpler (you only write your single line c'tor statement and any scope-based cleanup just magically works without you having to write a single line of extra code).

It's an interesting idea though however not quite one I'd go for.

That being said, more frequent updates (not now, but when the game is 1 - 3 months to release) would really help bring up the hype!

As I was watching the video I thought it would be cool to move the iPad about to change the view direction if I chose--like some of the starfinder apps. It might be quicker to use the accelerometer than the touchpad for some of the movement choices. Maybe that's what you meant by virtual mouse.

By the way, Braid was just great. Thanks!

This is what it's all about Milan regardless of the medium. I love running into your people who love something so much that they became almost obsessed with it. That kind of passion is infectious. I'm interested in reading your paper as well. I'm the same way as you about my favorite films Leon the Professional, Memento Mori, Donnie Darko, Mulholland Drive, and Audition. I wrote an essay, among others, about Mulholland Drive and how it makes complete sense (because I saw so many crazy inaccurate interpretations out there that didn't use the film to prove itself). I also wrote an essay about how terrible a movie Inception really is.

In other words, seeing you get excited about Braid is what makes game developers in the first place. Are you interested in making a game yourself by any chance?

Just watched the whole review, too, and I agree with absolutely everything - it sums up all the feelings I've been having regarding the game (without even touching on the ending that manages to destroy all remaining scraps of social criticism in one easy, breezy, 10-minute walk).

... But enough about Bioshock Infinite. And for the lack of a better place (and since I'm already commenting on a post)...

I am a great fan of Braid. In fact, it's safe to say that I love Braid as much as Tim loves the Princess - I could talk for hours about the meta-theme of obsession and how this... Work of art, dare I say it, was the only one that managed to TURN ME INTO a character, instead of just (and this is still quite something!) making me empathize with him/her/it. Last year, I wrote a 20-page paper on how Braid retells the myth of Prometheus for one of my college courses, and this year, I am working with a teaching assistant on writing an analysis of the game from the perspective of cognitive semantics (namely, conceptual and multimodal metaphors). I'm not trying to sound pretentious or anything - I'm just stating this as a testament of my love for the game. Having said that - if the things Jonathan has said and shown so far are any indication, I'll soon be writing papers and losing sleep on The Witness, as well. Thank you for having the courage (and I believe this is the right adjective) to show the world that video games need not emulate other media in order to be meaningful and emotional, and that what is intrinsically their greatest strength - their interactivity - is all they really need to rely on in order to tell a story, provide an experience - in short, to communicate.

Looking forward to this one. Godspeed to the whole team.
